I recently had the opportunity to test a new PWC sound system that’s just come on the market. And while I’m not the type that has to have my tunes with me wherever I go, I realize that plenty of PWC enthusiasts do like a soundtrack to their rides. This one’s for you…

I’ve done a full in-depth review of the system on PersonalWatercraft.com. Go there to check out all the pertinent details. Here I’ll cover what I see as the most interesting, and compelling, thing about the system — that the WaveAudia components are not bolt-ons, but rather stick-ons.

Yes, you read right. Rather than mechanical fasteners and installation methods that require drilling or cutting, the WaveAudia system attaches with a pretty high-tech adhesive from 3M that claims to rival the strength of mechanical means. Speakers clip into mounts that secure to the console with adhesive, as does the volume control. The power button can remain loose, or be stuck to a mount as well. There are plenty of wires, naturally, but with care you can tuck them out of sight, and actually make a pretty clean installation.

Think the adhesive will fall off over time? So did I. But after a little research on 3M’s website, I’m hedging my bets. Apparently this stuff is pretty well proven, meaning that if you did the installation right, everything may very well stay put. Whether the components last long-term in a watery environment, only time will tell. But I have to say I’m initially impressed with the quality of the products. Other than some wire connectors that I think are more appropriate for land than sea, everything seems pretty well made.

Here’s the company’s install video…

Yes, I worry about sound systems in general. I don’t like the idea of a distracted driver not able to hear the sounds of an overtaking PWC or boat. Still, when used responsibly, the WaveAudia setup offers a unique alternative to permanently mounted marine stereos or waterproof iPod cases.
